What to do after a Property Loss:
Protect the Property
One of the most important things to do after a property loss is making temporary repairs required to prevent further damage. Do your best to protect your property, as your insurance may not cover ensuing damage to your property if you have not taken reasonable steps to secure the property. Be careful not to risk your own safety when making the repairs.
Your insurance will reimburse you for all reasonable costs incurred to protect your property, as long as you save receipts for any work you carry out.
Remember that payments for temporary repairs are part of the total loss settlement. So don’t make extensive permanent repairs until after the claims adjuster has been to your property and assessed the damage.
Call Your Insurance Broker
After a property loss you must report the damage to your insurance broker to start the claim process. Your broker will:
- Advise if the policy covers the damage to your property
- Supply you with a claim form to complete
- Report the claim to your insurer International Underwriting Agencies.
Processing your claim
International Underwriting Agencies will report your claim to the claims management team at Cunningham Lindsey.
This team, known as ClaimSolutions, will validate the policy details and make an evaluation to establish if an adjuster will be needed to visit and assess the damage.
If an adjuster is required this visit will be arranged as soon as possible. The more information you can supply about your damaged/loss the sooner your claim will be settled. Cunningham Lindsey has an experienced team of property loss adjusters, and other professional consultants ready to help investigate and measure your property and BI losses.
The adjuster will play the leading role, but may not have actual financial authority. He or she will report to ClaimSolutions for approval on payments or repair authorities.
The adjuster can also be helpful in advising on what steps to take to prevent further damage and to mitigate the loss. They can direct the insured to firms that can provide the necessary cleanup and emergency repair services.
Settling your claim
If you have suffered a minor loss ClaimSolutions will ask you to send invoices for the repairs you have carried out, or documents to support the loss you have suffered. If they are happy with this documentation a Discharge form will be sent for you to sign and finalise the claim, allowing payment to be made less any policy excess which may be applicable.
When an adjuster has been involved he or she will report their findings to ClaimSolutions, recommending appropriate payments or that a suitable contractor be engaged to carry out the required repairs.
Should progress payments be required to you directly these can be made at intervals during the claim and you will be asked to sign a discharge before any final payment is made. Again your claim will be subject to a policy which will be deducted from your settlement.
